Take a serious truth from the Bible, turn it into a light, breezy song and you’ve got “Oh Death,” the new song from MercyMe (“Always Only Jesus,” “I Can Only Imagine“) This tune brings back memories of songs like “Ob la di, Ob la da” by the Beatles and “Hey There Delilah” from the early 2000s. It’s catchy and fun, but the difference? The meaning behind those words!
Oh death, I will not be afraid
In the end, you will lose
I will dance on your grave with the One who buried you
You ain’t nothin’ but a stone that my Savior rolled away
Set you straight and set me free
Oh death, you are dead to me
(Oh dear, you are dead to me)
When you sing along with this one, you’re telling death and the fear of death goodbye forever and reminding yourself that Jesus’ sacrifice for us—His death and burial—weren’t the end of the story. The resurrection from the grave on Sunday morning means death to death for you and me when we know and follow Him. That’s where the power is: in the empty tomb and the One who rolled the stone away so He could walk out of it. Death is not to be feared. It has no sting because of Jesus!
Here’s Bart Millard from MercyMe talking about their new song.
